"Client Gate" - "Clients gate" access to electronic administration in Hungary

Podnikanie v zahraničí

What is "Klientská brána" or "Client Gate" in Hungary and why do you need it?

"Ügyfélkapu", literally translated as "Client Gate" in Hungary, is a portal managed by the central government that provides access to e-administration. The Client Gate (or "Ügyfélkapu" in Hungarian) is an access point to electronic public administration in Hungary. It allows you to handle administrative matters online or schedule appointments at public administration offices. Through the Client Gate, you can register your Hungarian company on the Company Gate, making it an essential part of the company formation process. Find more information here.

What can you do through the Client Gate?

"Ügyfélkapu" is a gateway to electronic public administration, through which, as a private individual, you can:

  • send messages directly to authorities,
  • submit personal tax returns,
  • book appointments to handle matters at local government offices (e.g., work permits, residence cards, address cards, or social security).

Each user has their own inbox on the portal, where they can receive and view messages from authorities. Due to data protection, messages are not sent directly to your email.

The Client Gate also provides access to the Company Gate ("Cégkapu"), where you can manage matters related to your Hungarian company. The Company Gate is similar to the Client Gate but serves companies and relevant individuals (e.g., managing directors or accountants). Official electronic messages for your company are sent through this platform, and accountants submit reports to the tax authorities here. Access to the Company Gate, and thus to the Client Gate, is therefore essential.

How to register for the Client Gate?

Access to the e-Government portal can be obtained not only by Hungarian citizens but also by citizens of other countries. Registration is possible:

  • at any local government office in Hungary ("kormányablak"),
  • at Hungarian embassies or consulates abroad.

Documents required for registration:

  • Hungarian citizens: identity card.
  • EEA citizens: EEA identity card or passport.
  • Citizens of other countries: passport.

Click here to book an appointment for registration at a Hungarian government office. On the screen, first select „Ügycsoport“ (the second to last option: „Ügyfélkapu, E-ügyintézés“), then „Ügy“ (choose „Ügyfélkapu regisztráció“). Then select your preferred location by county and address, specify the desired date range, and provide your contact details. The system will then show you available appointments at your preferred location.

Registration process

When registering for the Client Gate, you will be asked to present an identification document and provide an email address to which you will receive notifications from the platform. You will need to choose a username, and a password will be generated for you. After registration, the account must be activated within 5 days and the original password changed, otherwise the account will be deleted.

How much does it cost?

Obtaining a Client Gate in Hungary is free for everyone.

How long does it take?

Registration usually takes approximately 15-20 minutes. If you register in person, there might be a waiting period depending on the location and time of your registration.
